[Need Help] Device Not Booting Up After Battery Is Used Up
 

I have this weird issue with my N900. Whenever I leave the device on until the battery dies, I can't no longer charge the battery nor booting the device up. When it happens, I have to remove the battery and put the battery back in for the device to take charge again.

I am very concerned about this issue. Could someone tell me what's going on here? Do I have a defect device?

The n900 actually runs its own charging programme from the software, so it needs a little power to do that. You would be better off topping the battery up before it gets completely drained, for the health of both the battery and the device.

Have you read the user guide that came with it? It says that in case of battery depletien it can take some time to actually start showing charging indication.

@deakhead: If you don't read manuals, at least note that with lithium batteries (as everything is using these days) you should, if at all possible, avoid draining the battery. Charge it when you get a chance, even if it's only dropped a couple of bars.

Thanks for the advice. What I thought was if the battery got charged too often its life will be shortened.

I have a E71 which has incredible battery life. I usually charge it every 3 or 4 days. Sometimes the battery dies before I charge it. Have been using E71 for over a peroid of a year, the battery still seems as good as when I brought it. Even when my E71's battery dies, it only takes about a few seconds to pick up the charge - I can turn on the phone almost instantly.

The battery capacity is reduced after a certain number of recharges, but it's more really the amount of charging than the number of charges. In any case it's totally different from NiMH, not to mention NiCd batteries. Don't worry too much about charging often.

What really kills the lifetime of a lithium-ion or lithium-polymer battery are two things:
1: Deep discharge. A single very deep discharge of my S-E phone reduced the capacity from nearly 3 weeks to 2 days.
2: Staying at 100% charge and being too hot at the same time.

No. 2 is not much of an issue for the N900, it can be a big one with laptops though (they can be quite warm while staying on the mains all the time).
