How do I re-flash my N900
 

Howdy All,

So I just got my N900 in the mail last night and lo-and behold I manged to brick the darn thing in less than 24 hours. I've been searching around online but I cannot find instructions anywhere on how I can re-flash the device so it will be like how it was when I got it. How would I go about doing this?

How I managed to brick the device was in my attempt to make it more usable I was moving my /usr partition to reside on my /home instead of / because / is stuck at a piddly 100 megs (so I could not install anything else). However when I removed the old /usr after copying it over the device promptly hard-locked on me and now fails to turn on.

So a better solution - is there a way I can mount the file systems from the phone on my laptop so I can create a system link between where I moved /usr to on my /home and where it should reside so it will boot again for me?

Hoping someone can help me out here... I'm hoping to get the device back online ASAP

Hi Jef;
Unfortunately Nokia n900 doesn't have hard reset mechanism. Therefore you have to flash the image :(

Thank you much. I actually just found that same page on Google some five minutes after posting here :)

Any chance anyone knows anything about my second question there? Is there a way I can mount the filesystems from the device on my PC?

If you're installing from Extras the large data goes into /opt, which leaves you plenty of room to install applications. There's no need for you to attempt to move your /usr directory elsewhere (and plenty of good reasons why Nokia didn't pick that route in the first place). :)

Easy answer: Don't; it's not necessary.

Its 100% necessary if I want to be installing standard Linux applications which by default install to /usr (among other places, most of which are located in the root partition). Half the reason I bought this device is because it is compatible with 18,000 debian packages that are out there.

I must say - the default file system setup on the N900 is by far its worst feature. I can understand why it is setup the way it is for the basic phone user - but it should have an option for those who want to tinker to readjust the partitions to their pleasure IMO
