how to change/add/replace icons
 

My N900 shows two screens with icons linked to applications; new applications get added to the second screen. I do not know how these screens should be called. For the moment I call it the applications screen.

There is a desktop, that shows some icons; browser favorites also are stored as icons there. Let us call it the desktop :-)

Things I'd like to do:

- add icons from the applications screen to the desktop
- change icons (some of the new apps are just blue rectangles)

The documentation wiki does not give much help here.

Tap on the top right corner of the screen you want to make changes to. A little cog icon will appear.

Tap the cog.

Your background image will go fuxxy, and all the in-screen icons will show a little 'x' on their corner. To remove any icon from the screen, tap the x.

To add new icons/widgets/shortcuts and bookmarks, from this screen (With the tap the top bar (Named Desktop menu'. You can add more items, and also change the brackground or theme.

Some widgets will also show a little spanner in this view - that's how you alter their settings.

When you have finished, top right corner sayd 'done'. Tap that.

As for the new app showing a 'blue box' icon, when you install it to a desktop the apps own scon will be enabled. It will also show in the menu screen then too. (Note, if you have installed apps that are still under development, they may not have an icon yet!)

thanks Kathy (btw: what is a maemo greeter?).

So it is not possible to change the icon? That is inconvenient, because there is no text when you add shortcuts to 'blue box' icons.

There's a chance that the application does have an icon, but your icon cache hasn't been updated yet. A reboot is the easiest way to see if this is the case.

You can change the icons by to something else by editing the .desktop files, but it's best to be sure of what you're doing for this.

Changing icons has already been discussed in this forum. However, I don't recall the thread anymore.

Anyway, a solution can be found here and here.
