n800 feasible as a PDA replacement?
 

My big complaint with the 770 was it's impracticality as a Linux PDA. Does the n800 fare any better? It certainly has better storage and performance. It would be great if it could sync with Evolution for calendaring etc...:rolleyes:

I love to revisit this concept every now and then. The GPE suite is unacceptable for my needs - I need something that syncs, preferrably with Evolution. I can use Google Calendar with it, but only read-only.

OpenedHand has been working on a dbus-based version of EDS (Evolution Data Server) for some time. They wrote some PIM software, too, and although it started off as somewhat as a proof-of-concept for their EDS work, it looks to be coming along rather nicely. Check out the screenshots for Contacts and Dates. And because they're based on EDS, it should be pretty easy for them to sync with Evolution.

So, although the current state of affairs is a little shabby (and has been since the 770's inception), the horizon looks promising.

I'm still waiting for Nokia to write a native Google Calendar client application for Nokia 770/n800, maybe with connection to gmail for contacts. That would be sweet. Don't worry; I'm not holding my breath. :)

I've seen "DejaDesktop"'s web page. www.dejadesktop.com

It says it syncs the 770 (800 "soon") with Outlook.

If it does, this would be my ideal solution as I must use Outlook.

At $10 a month it's a bit expensive but if it really does what it says it does then that would be acceptable.

Do people here use it? Has it been tried and rejected by some? Is there a review of it I could look at?

If it does work then I might be able to get rid of my Palm and get the 800.

I used dejapim for a considerable period. It seems to work reasonably well under OS 2005, but they could never seem to get OS 2006 quite right -- some contacts and appointments would seem to sync, and others would not, with no discernable pattern. They did try hard -- I was on a first name basis with more than one of the technical support folks(!). Note that I was charged $4.95 a month, not $9.95, though. One of the problems (seemed to me, anyway), was that the company did not own or operate the server that they were using, so in the case where there seemed to be a server problem (which appeared to be the case), it was a long a laborious process to get changes made on the server. I finally gave up hope and am now using GPE hoping for a way to sync before too long.
