Will I be able to use the GPS without the data plan?
I'm on prepaid and would like to know if I can use the GPS without a data plan? If I'm able to, how to use the GPS? I tried tapping on the map it asked me to select connection (internet connection). I'm using t-mobile usa.

I have home wifi. That is the reason I am not jumping into t-mo yet. I need t-mo when travelling, still very foggy about what to do to get online with t-mo proxy. Need your expertise.

Re: Will I be able to use the GPS without the data plan?
that's because the phone has AGPS enable by default ... which requires internet. So follow the instructions in those threads and you should be good to go using gps offline. btw if you disable agps then it shouldn't ask you for connection

Re: Will I be able to use the GPS without the data plan?
I thought AGPS just used the GSM band to help locate you when your not within normal GPS sat range? guess I was wrong.
I have used the GPS before and do not have a data plan, the problem I have is really only a software one. I need a gps program that lets me download the maps while at home or in a public wifi location and save them to the device rather than stream them live from the internet. eCoach uses the gps and is like half way there, its not meant for driving its meant for athletic stuff but I can start the program while in a wifi zone, load the maps for the area I will be bike riding and the gps works fine with no internet connection after I leave the wifi area. It saves the maps but only while I use the program, when I close it next time I use it, it downloads the maps again. The GPS itself never needs internet, its built into the phone and communicates directly to the satellites, so really I think the only problem is the versatility of the GPS program, it needs to cater to people without data plans and not just people with them. |

yes agps does use gsm band to help with sat lock. However in his case he doesn't have map preloaded therefore it's asking him for internet connection to download the map as he go.
