Soft poweroff clarification

So what exactly is a soft poweroff and how can be run from cli? To which state is it comparable on a desktop PC? S1/S3?

And what exactly is the difference between "shutdown" and "poweroff" commands in Terminal (except that shutdown doesn't work but it has some options).

Disconnect all devices from sending and receiving. Is like a PDA without connectivity.

Not sure about the first but poweroff is basically a shortcut to "shutdown -h now". Shutdown supports more actions as the system shuts down than poweroff does.

So what is the difference between soft poweroff and offline mode?
