If it's web based can't you just go on it from the browser?
Or install Pidgin?

I've never used eBuddy, but from what Wikipedia has to say about the iPhone app, I don't really see anything that can't be done through Pidgin, or even the plugin packs for Maemo's built in RTCOMM framework. Is there a specific feature one of those lacks, or were you just asking because it was familiar from another platform?

Re: Ebuddy for n900??

I know this is a relatively old thread but I only just got my N900.

Did we ever figure out whether eBuddy will be available on the N900? It's what I used on my Google G1 and I found it really easy to use.

I have downloaded Pidgin and it's fine, but I find that whenever I move away from the application (for example, if I switch to another app or even just when my screen goes dark to preserve the battery) then the app sets my status as 'Away', and there doesn't seem to be any way to stop it doing this. I want my status to still say 'Available' even if I don't have the application on the screen.

Can anyone help me with either of these things?

Is there any particular service you need?

It's frankly not really a matter of "figuring it out". If the company behind eBuddy decides to release a version for the N900, then they'll probably have a press release; if they don't we can't really do anything about it. That said, the N900 already has a pretty good integrated IM/VoIP system which is also extensible. Some of the plugins (Pecan/Butterfly, I'm looking at you...) are still a bit buggy, but that can be improved. To reiterate my earlier post, and nosa101's, is there something that the current chat framework or plugins lack? In my opinion, it would be better to make the (already good) chat framework in Maemo be even more awesome than to try to convince a company to make a third-party app to replace it (even if they'd listen).
So tell us, what is the current system lacking? What do you like about eBuddy that it doesn't do, or does differently? Heck, write it up and put it in the maemo.org Brainstorm.

Re: Ebuddy for n900??

The two IM services I use are Gtalk and Y!M. Gtalk is listed in the integrated Im/VoIP list, but Y!M isn't.

As I said, I've been using Pidgin for Y!M, but it keeps setting my status as away as soon as I move away from the window, and there doesn't seem to be a way to stop it doing this.

I want it to show my status as 'Available' so that my friends know I'm online.

pidgin can do everything you want. to change your status settings:
in the buddy list screen click the top menu then select "tools" then "preferences".
there is a "status/idle" tab where you can change all the settings such as idle time and away message or choose to always stay available. you might need to click the very little dots next to the tabs on the right to show more tabs. I guess they should be arrows but are not.

I think a much easier way would be to use Pidgin and try to fix what's lacking there (either by supplying patches or by reporting bugs and being a bit active in the forums/mailing lists) as it's way more probable that you would get the functionality you need in the N900 Pidgin than hoping some company would release a N900 version of Ebuddy.

Personally I'm very happy with the built-in IM which I use most of the time, but I also like remote irssi/bitlbee over ssh from home which I normally use.
