My N900 review
I have had my device now for a little under a month and I think I have played around with it enough to give my assessment of the device. I would also like to say that I have not used any other smart-phone before this one so I do not likely have the same expectations as someone who is used to any other phone.
The phone: This works great and I enjoy it immensely. The only problems about the phone is portrait mode and quick accessibility. (It would be nice if you hit the camera button twice within 1 second it starts the phone app instead of the camera) The quality of the phone calls (T-Mobile) is about the same as any other phone. When using Skype however the quality is slightly worse. I also tested the SIP client on the phone with a sip provider (flow-route) and I have never heard a better sounding cell phone. The quality was absolutely phenomenal, at least twice as good as Skype. Maps: I actually really enjoy the GPS and mapping on the device. I find the gps is very very accurate and updates fairly quickly and the maps application suites me just fine. I do wish that it had turn by turn directions. Another quick improvement could be animating or projecting movement so it is smoother. Web: This is a ridiculously good browser. I can absolutely do anything my desktop can do on my phone. It works with a lot of enterprise web portals. One improvement could be the behavior of the back button on the screen. I care less about the sliding animation history then being able to quickly correct a mistake from clicking on the wrong link. Other then that and a few performance issues I would call it perfect (at least for my use) Apps (in general): When the testing repo is enabled I am floored by the amount of free quality apps available. A lot of these apps' equivilant on any other devices cost money and often I find the ones for this phone to be superior. The only problem I have is that there are too many apps it slows down the phones ability to create and index the package list. Vpnc Who ever made this port rocks.. This is a lifesaver. I absolutely love it. I have just one suggestion. I have a ton of vpn profiles (about 90) can they be listed in alphabetical order so it is easier to find? Contacts I really like it but I have some issues. The bug with skype being unable to dial numbers without +1 in front of them really really destroys the entire feature. I had to go in and modify every single contact to have a + in the telephone number (I have about 300 contacts) and this is very annoying and this should have been fixed. Also I would like contacts to merge if they have EXACTLY the same name automatically. IM/SMS Love it, no issues here except on some networks loading the scroll log can cause it to lag quite a bit. The file transfer app works great in conjunction with a google talk/jabber account. Random bits +the SSH server is great. -Installing apps can take way to long. (prompts pause install and every app is installed one at a time) +Amount of networks (IM) supported is fantastic - Google Voice could be done better/integrated more seamless. +Backup function works great -Battery just doesn't cut it +SNES emulation is very good/cool +Media player is good and suffices -Media player can sometimes skip/jitter slightly depending on cpu load +Conky is the best way to impress other geeks All in all I love my n900 and I haven't even touched the surface of its capability yet. |

Aren't you irritated by the fact that the browser doesn't re-flow text when you zoom in? For me this is a real failing of this browser - when I compare to the ability of the Nexus One browser to zoom and re-flow I get quite jealous:o |
