I got sent this website, I have no idea if it is legitimate or a good source, does anyone else know of this site?

The guide your reading is for THIS site....
Go to downloads, set it to Maemo 5 and you can download applications. Don't leave it as OS2008.

The provided link in the post directs you to applications for the previous version of maemo (OS2008), you can click the maemo5 link on the top right hand corner if you're interested in applications for the N900. Provided that you download applications for the correct version of maemo they are safe to use.
