[Under consideration] Add Scrollbars

I am posting it here because Brainstorm is the place to post when you would like to see something come to maemo.

Here is the problem

Even though the kinetic scrolling works fine, sometimes in long lists/pages/content it is not easy to get where you want to go fast.
You have to flick your finger a couple of times.

When you drag a very small scrollbar will show on the right side to give you a indication where you are about. (The fist time I saw this I wanted it to scroll like in a browser)

Lets say you have 100 folder (images for example) and need to find something and you dont know if its in folder 80,81,82. In file manager you end up flicking and flicking till you are in folder 80. If you dont finde it there you go one folder up and the flicking flicking starts again.

Solution

a) typing brings you to the folder (thats another idea)
b) a scrollbar.

Here is how it could work based on ideas from above thread.

Generally

1) on the right side where the indicator of the scrollbar is there would actually be a scrollbar or better said it would work as a scrollbar.

People have argued that it would not be finger friendly.

a) why do we have a sylus? because its sometimes good to use one
b) we could have the best of both worlds. Kinetic with finger, scrollbar with stylus
c) acutally the scrollbar sensitive area could be wider then what you see to make it more finger friendly (maybe semi transparent whenn you use your finger
d) the scrollbar could have a option setting wide/small

2) There could be arrows added on top and bottom

simple click takes you down or up a bit like in a browser
double click would take you all the way up and down

Well since there is already space recerved for the spacebar it's just a small mather of functionallity :-)

I hope this brainstrom thread is the right place to have this idea heard/seen by the developers.

The N900 is just a great phone and I love the flexibility. If the developers of maemo will listen to the lots of small improvement ideas from the community it will really have a chance of becomming the next iPhone.

Someone came up with the idea of a scrollbar visible when swiping from the right side. Maybe semi transparent

It was my Idea for the Browser: http://maemo.org/community/brainstor...long_websites/

But I would also prefer to have this on mostly all long hildon menus. At the moment for Nokia a wontfix for Maemo 5. So I hope the Micro B coders could implement something linke this in the Browser itself. But I would also vote for your Brainstorm. Thankyou marktold. :)

Scrollbars would be great or even if you are in a long list and you opened the keyboard and pressed a key it would go straight to that letter in the list.
