wondering..maemo6 demo on N900
so, i really dont get this, first day they announce demo of maemo6 on N900. the second day they announce maemo as obsolete and we are moving to the "OS of the future": meego.
they dont know if it going to be available for N900...but they know they ll release it in less than a couple of months...:S so..does the fact that they given us a taste of maemo6(or meego) on N900 mean that N900 will be the first device to run meego? http://www.andreagrandi.it/2010/02/1...i-screenshots/ or they just wanna play with our minds to show what we are going to miss if we dont get the new replacement device of N900? if the second happens, this is very bad way to tease us for a new product. i just wanna understand what is behind all this because clearly nokia knows if meego is going to be available for existing devices.(if it was good news though i m sure they would announce it) |

I do not think the scenario that you describe would make sense from the business perspective or PR perspective. It's obvious that taunting customers who bought your most expensive product like this is very, very bad for PR and does not bode well for long-term profitability. Furthermore, if Nokia has a demo of Meego on the N900, it means they spent money on this effort. From a systems engineering perspective, it would take just a wee bit more to bring it out to market.

But it seems nothing is set in concrete, Perhaps enough requests on this forum will get them to change thinking! |
Re: wondering..maemo6 demo on N900
If it is ever released it will be after the launch of the first Maemo6 (Meego) device.

Re: wondering..maemo6 demo on N900
well from the video i watched, what the nokia guy said: more work for the n900 fanboys-they have to make it happen on their own.

Re: wondering..maemo6 demo on N900
I've been thinking about this whole 'MeeGo' shindig and you know what?
On my N900, not a lot of content that I've added afterwards to the device has come from Nokia, except the firmware updates. Therefore I don't think that Maemo 5 is dead just because of its upcoming ugly-named cousin. What additional functionality has Nokia brought your device since the realease of the device? Not much. So what do you need Nokia's support for? Afterthought: IS there anything stopping the community from making unofficial firmware updates? I think everything about Maemo is open? Even phone component specific drivers and everything else imaginable? |

It is about getting apps not from Nokia, but from others. If meego is the future, then new apps will be built for meego! However, i think the plan is probably for the first 'meego' device (the n9xx) from Nokia use the n900 electronics- but with a new processor family working with intel (e.g. atom). Which means the n900 could be an orphan in not just the OS, but also the processor family. Putting meego on the n900 will ensure newer python apps or other interpreted apps will run, but C apps may need a recompile even if meego is there |
