N900 confusions, any help?

Hi All

Just got a UK N900 rx-51_2009se_2.2009.51-1.203.2_pr_203 and I'm rather struggling with some things:

Can this thing not be used in portrait mode other than for the phone dial pad?

When connecting to e.g. the wireless network they have in the pub, it wants me to push a button on the router, or type a pin into the router - why can't we just have the old fashioned way of "ask the pub staff what the wpa key is, they tell me, and i type it in" - how do I enter the wpa key as a word without this pin/button pushing nonsense?

How can I type my SMS etc with a 3x3 key pad (like a phone) - I really don't like qwerty keyboards because I find them cumbersome and slow.. I'm after a portrait mode, can-be-operated-with-just-a-thumb, 3x3 button layout with predictive text (i.e. like a regular phone) - how do I do that?

I can't find any form of Switch app (to copy contacts and messages off my old device) - how do we do this painlessly? (Nokia Content Copier will only copy contacts; messages are not transportable)

How do I make the phone forget all the badly spelled words the previous owner seems to have entered? Example, if I type YOU, the phone suggests YOUUUUUUUUUUUU with the UUUUUUUU highlighted.

Another way of asking the above; what's the terminal command to search every file on the device for "youuuuuuuu" or alternately, who knows what file the dictionary is stored in so i can edit or delete it?

Can the thing that organises the main screen snap the icons to a larger grid or must I mess around nudging with the stylus till they line up? (They tend to jump out of line just as I remove the stylus from the screen)

Cheers

Hi, and welcome.

I'm kinda, sorry, n00b too. Can answer only couple of questions.

No. Only phone application can be used in portrait mode, by default. I think there's some experimental shortcut for the browser, MicroB, but I'm not certain. Couple of applications also work in portrait mode, but that depends how the developer wrote it.

For now there's no way for this. The on-screen keyboard is also querty. It can be turned on in Settings->Text input->Use virtual keyboard, and will only work when the physical keyboard is closed. Don't know why this is needed, didn't use it much.

Not really - you can press Ctrl+Shift+O in the browser to enable portrait mode there, but it's only partly implemented.

There's a workaround given in the bug report, but the issue has been flagged as not going to be fixed in Maemo 5.

I don't think you can currently - there's a brainstorm been set up for this, but it doesn't look like there's been any progress.

You can certainly easily sync contacts, not sure about messages though - there's a "Transfer & sync" option in the Settings application, which allows you to import data from another device. You can try with that and see whether it imports messages.

See this thread for instructions on clearing this up.

Yes, you can set this using Tweakr, which should be in the extras-testing repository.

Here's another Q:
Why are apps in the extras repo either a few hundred kilobytes or 6.x megs? They are always 6-something megabytes if they are large; is there a 6 meg runtime library or something that they are all bundled with?

Depends on the app, but chances are that they use the same library.
Don't worry, the library need to be downloaded only once (and when it's updated), after that the size of other apps depending on it should go down.
