N900 wifi connection problem

Hi all,

I have a brand new N900 and have the following problem. I'd be very grateful if anyone can help.

My phone:
I have updated to latest software (2.2009.51-1.203.2) and I do not (yet) have a valid SIM in the device. (Contract doesn't go live for a few more days.)

The problem:
I have a D-Link D624T modem/router with WPA security. The N900 sees the access point, asks me for the pre-shared key, and connects. Skype goes online, web browser works beautifully. BUT other internet things do not work: App Manager cannot connect to the catalogue, email cannot connect to the imap server.

I know these things are set up correctly because I have tried with two other wireless networks and both email and App Manager work beautifully.

So the problem must lie with my router, its configuration, or something like that. However I'm stuck on how to diagnose it.

Is anyone able to offer any suggestions please?

Thanks!
-Mark

Re: N900 wifi connection problem

Sounds a protocol specific issue or even a DNS issue. Check the manual for how to get to the firewall page and make sure you don't have anything relevant blocked. Also worth checking if there is a newer firmware available for your router, DLink often improve their firmware solving odd issues like this.

Thanks for the reply Fargus. I agree it does sound like a protocols-specific issue. What makes you think it's DNS related though?

No firmware updates for my router since 2007 (I'm on the latest), and firewall is switched off, nothing blocked in the outbound direction.

i would recommending you to reset to factory setting on your router. I had a very similar problem and worst i can't connect to it at all. reset the router and build the setting from scratch one by one slowly and test it on your N900 before moving to the next step. Else just upgrade router firmware as well.

FYI, your firmware isn't the latest. The latest is 3.2010.02-8.

Re: N900 wifi connection problem

Thanks for the replies all. Problem sort-of resolved now: new router and it all works fine. Fortunately I had a new, unused one which my ISP sent me when I signed up.

Going through my collection of old routers I found one which worked (perfectly) with the N900 and not at all with the PC (over wireless anyway - worked fine with the PC on a wired connection). I guess despite this technology being 10 years old, there are still significant interoperability problems...
