Few new user questions.
 

Hi.

I won a N900 on a blog few weeks ago.I've been using it for more than a week now. I previously had a LG KS360 (which sucks pretty much as it always shutdowns... and did not charge anymore) so the change is pretty strong. I'm really happy with my new phone.
I've been lurking around here for 2-3 weeks but I still have some questions to ask:

I just installed Midnight Commander. What do I have to enter in the fields when i choose to save a file (I mean, how do I choose where I save it)?

Is there a way to access folders such as /usr/share/... on my computer? For exemple to edit the html for conversations. Being able to save it should make it possible right? Saving -> transfering to computer (?)

Is it possible to show only contacts for a service or at least separate contacts by services? I used jabber for the facebook chat but it added 250 guys... Kinda disturbing.

I installed mplayer. What does it do? It's not in the application menu.

Is there a way to add codecs? I already installed the "additionals decoders" thing but some of my .avi files still won't read

I managed to add a boot video with BootScreen but it won't remove the handshake video (Hands-v32-h264.avi). Is this normal? (Boot = Handshake > PIN code > custom video)

Use SSH via a terminal.

I think there was a request in bugs.maemo.org for this... Please no "me too" comments, if you find it feel free to vote for it.

Play audio and video from the command line.

There is a third party package called "extra codecs" or similar, should be in the maemo.org repository (Extras).

Well, the N900 is a computer more than a phone, so you can just download e.g. Leafpad and edit the files on-phone

Alternately, you can possibly open X Terminal and use it to copy the files to an accessible location and then back again using the cp command. Using UP and DOWN cursor keys on phone recalls terminal history so copying the files (once you've written the commands) should be just UP UP RETURN etc

The top menu has a Groups button that lets me see just certain types of contacts but I'm guessing you want to see "All contacts except facebook" ?
Maybe you can use "Voip and IM accounts" control panel to Enable/Disable facebook account.. Or find a way of scripting it?

A command line video player. Maybe you need a gui for it like KMPlayer?

And probably some info on how to add them. Be careful using Devel; leave it disabled most of the time because the update manager will try to install new unstable versions of your existing apps from it

When you save a file MC should open a text-entry box where you type in where you want to save and the name you want to give the file.

You can access all files/folders with MC by running it as root. The built-in text editor in MC is pretty good.

The N900 plays .avi by default. Some thing is different about those .avi filees that won't play. Need more details.

I haven't used BootScreen so can't help you with it, but you can stop the default 'hands' video from playing by commenting it out in: /etc/hildon-welcome.d/default.conf

I know, that's what I did with Midnight Commander but I just want to edit from my computer as it will be faster.

I already have installed KMPlayer.

Also, I was wondering is there was a player that can scrobble (Last.fm) while we are not connected to the internet.
I have that last.fm plugin which works only when i'm online. It does not remember what I play while i'm offline.
I tried Vagalume but it doesn't even play my mp3s.

For the FB contacts problem, if you really don't want to associate them to their specific `real` contacts, merge them into one 'Facebook' contact and then they wont clutter your contacts list (tho they will all appear as same contact in any telepathy-related service afterward).

KMPlayer is a frontend for mplayer, mplayer plays from the CLI.
