You've got "unzip" in the command line.

Xarchiever is a good graphical interface to use to manipulate zip, rar and other compress files.

thanks guys... i have added the unzip addon for file manager as suggested on a few threads in the forum. But I'm still unable to open the zip attachments in my email. any suggestions?

You might need to save the zip attachment before opening - it may be unzipping it to a temp directory or somewhere that you can't see it.
