Can the 800 connect to a tv?
 

Hey guys i just ordered the 800 but im selling my laptop as well, so the 800 will be my only source of internet what i was wondering is if i could connect it to my HD flat screen on my wall and use it as a monitor. Is it even possible? what kind or cord would i need to get if it is?

It looks like the N800 screen was shown on a big screen at the Nokia CES booth but who know how they actually did that! Would be pretty cool if a standard A/V out cord worked (as with video ipod)! With all of the hidden gems inside this thing, it would be funny if it worked!

It works with the Archos PMA430, but that one is of course meant to work with TVs.

Remembering the case of the PMA430: You'll need some sort of mouse driver and a visible pointer if you're going to output to a TV screen. Trust me...

you can use vnc to display the n800 screen on a computer. you could then plug the computer into a television.

Wait, I know another one: Point a video camera at the N800's screen and plug the camera into a TV set. :rolleyes:

Seriously, at the moment it can't be done. Maybe with a USB-to-tv converter, provided someone writes the drivers for it, provided you can get power to the USB bus, provided USB host can be compiled into the kernel. That's a lot of "provideds"...

Well in fact the videochip used in N800 has TV-out feature.

But to make it work you would probably need to solder video out connector and also reprogram the chip to actually produce TV compatible video signal (and also disable internal LCD as both cannot be used at once).

Soldering TV-out cables to the motherboard! That's even better!

Wait, wait... How about we synchronise the video with a Nipkow disk and send it to a Baird Televisor? No soldering needed, see? And I bet we can do better than Baird's 240 lines, 12.5fps resolution. Actually, isn't that about the best the N800's video player can do anyway?

You can always just buy a large fresnel lens and put the N800 behind it. :)
