this is good news even if you dont like Microsoft and all they stand for, now we'll atleast be able to watch videos what use the crap

I'm not a silverlight fan, but it makes sense for MS to make silverlight available as broadly as possible, and it's good to see Maemo featuring as one of the platforms

hmm, I can't remember any site actually using silverlight without searching for them. I can only remember is was used on some goverment site, which was likely payed to use it.
I don't have it on my PC, why would I want it on a phone?

Re: Silverlight coming to Maemo

The national Italian television, RAI, unfortunately uses silverlight for its streaming site, and even if Linux and Mac users have repeatedly asked to guarantee technological neutrality as stated in its published mission, to date still hasn't quit the use of this Microsoft product.

This has prompted several users to look for alternative ways to connect to RAI streams (which by the way are financed by Italian taxpayers).
This has been a long struggle including cryptoanalysis and deobfuscation of code. To make a long story short, presently RAI can be seen on Linux devices, until some kind of stronger cryptography eventually will be used from server side. (N900 enclosed :) )

Having silverlight could be useful to see RAI streams without reverting to hacks - even if one has to accept yet another binary from Redmond.

Might put a bit of pressure on Adobe to release Flash 10 for Maemo I suppose.

Can't see any other benefit.

Silverlight works fine on Macs, and Moonlight (open-source collaboration between MS and Novell) is specifically written to function on Linux. You've got perfectly good technological neutrality here, if RAI's streams don't work with Moonlight, that's an artificial restriction being imposed by the TV station, and is not microsoft's or Silverlight's problem.

Maybe it's because Moonlight doesn't support DRM. So, netflix or anything else that requires DRM, won't work on linux.

Remember the Nokia - MS agreement.

Re: Silverlight coming to Maemo

Thank god.

Silverlight is superior to Flash in every possible way so good to see that it will be on the Maemo platform.
