Nokia failed with N900
 

First of all I have to say that I like my N900 so now no one doesn't need to come and blaim me for hating this device. As you will notice I use (or rather would use) N900 as an extension to my computers.

Even though I like N900 I think that Nokia did pretty bad job with it.

Firstly Nokia hyped N900 like it would be something awesomeness like some people think iPhone is/was. Well from marketing perspektive this is more than expected and somewhat natural. I got excited from the hype and pre-ordered device immediatelly it was available. The reason why I think all that hype should never had happened is that the N900 was so badly in development state when it was released even after months delaying.

There was that bug with wifi (is it completly fixed even now?), rebooting problems, fm-radio missing, where is the video call support, call transfer configuration and other pretty important stuff missing or incomplette. Howcome Nokia didn't even think of portait mode?!? It was promised for xmas but still not here. I can't believe that they did not think of it, it's just something that should be automatic.

Maemo select was going to be where you will get your software and other stuff easily. Well there is some software yes, but wallpapers still missing! How about ringtones and other stuff you might want? I would say failed attempt this select thingy as I never have used it since got my device.

My favorite thing was going to be multiple calendar support in N900 but as we now know it's a joke as you don't need them because you can't use them. There is simply no way to sync multiple calendars. You can sync only one of then if you like.

Ovi support is still missing. Possibly due the missing SyncML over IP support which makes it bit harder to sync stuff like calendars and contacts again.

Email app is not as good as it should be. No filttering possibilit, no smart folders, html messages look horrible when they have remote content.

Maps app... well it's simply a joke. Even the basic features are missing and it's pain to use. I would have expected something like Mapper is now but no!

Finnish keyboard layout has öäå - buttons which is nice, but I hate that up and down arrows are behind fn button. Well connectors and other buttons are not throughly thought I think. MicroUSB location sucks. When loading a battery and you might need to call someone you have cord pointing upwards WTF! Screen and keyboard locking/unlocking slider position sucks if you use phone with one hand. And is it even necessary when there is this slide your finger on screen thing. Headphone/av-connector location is awful, When listening music and using th device you have connector going through your hand and it's anoying me a lot, same with microUSB cable.

Overall quality of device is quite poor concidering the price. Lenscover breaks easily, mine in 2 days. The spring came out. USB port problems are huge! You need to be very carefull with it.

Phone app has been ok for my usage, but why is screen unlocked when getting a call, it is really easy to press button too early or even press wrong button all together.

As a phone N900 is not that good but multipurpose device it is and does good job with it. I only hope that Nokia will fix theese things. So that my good device would be awesome device. BTW. battery life is WAY too short.

i agree with nokia doing a completely wrong thing with how they are advertising the n900.

when nokia seriously expects it to be their flagship-product, the marketing-departement of nokia shouldnt ignore it like they are doing now.

but then again, making a flagship (even mainstream maybe?) device with linux never worked, i guess.

that said, seeing how awesome the community is, i dont consider this a major problem. the n900 will live on. maybe not forever, but for a long time.

@OP it sounds to me as though you heard the hype, too the marketing as gospel and then were disappointed when the additional assumptions that you made didn't happen.

Not quite sure what the WiFi bug is that you are talking about but mine is generally fine. Video calling has been available for ages and I have used it a few times - GTalk video call works fine. If you are talking about 3G Cellular video calling then I don't remember that ever being on the specifications and all the operators are *****ing about the fact that virtually no one uses it in Europe at least.
As for more than basic call support - this is a tablet that can make calls, not a super smart phone. I don't know anyone that was under the impression that this would be anything other than this.
Just becuase you can't sync your calendars doesn't make them unusable. I agree that not being able to use their own tech for syn is daft but this is a seperate issue again.
Portrait mode was, as far as I recollect, only promised for the browser (it's there) and applciations decide if they want to support portait or not.
Email apps on the tablet series have never been brilliant and agree they should be better but you are asking for corporate style features, this is an N series device, not an E Series.
Map app has basic features missing? Such as? It shows a map, it shows you where you are and where other things are. That sounds like a set of basic features to me. It is missing a few things if you were expecting a full blown sta-nav application but I don't believe it was touted as such and it is still under development.

Basically the N900 was always billed as a device for early adopters and technical users, not a mass user product so sounds as though you missed the point before buying. Glad you are enjoying the product though despite the frustrations!

The N900 is NOT the flagship product, The N97 is the flagship product.

concerning multiple calenders im currently syncing 1 exchange calender, and 3 google calenders using the ermingNG app. Really dont need more than 4 calenders

oh give it a rest. . .cry baby. sure ur annoyed about things not working for you but not every one has same problem.
