Contact merge

hi. i just got my n900 not too long ago. still learning how to use it. i was wondering. when i logged onto skype. it created or i should say it copied all my skype contact details onto my n900. ok i got couple of questions about the contacts.

i have some of my contacts from previous phone E71. i transferred it across to my n900 already. actually, some people on my contact list has the same name as the skype name, actually, they are the same people. but i just have their name on my address book from my E71. you see, E71 does not copy any of my skype contacts onto E71 address book at all, so i never had any of the same contacts show up twice in my address book.

if i merged any of my contacts in my n900, would that affect my skype contacts when i log on to my pc next in skype? i mean some of my friends would only have their skype name shows when i logged to skype with my PC. but if i merged my contacts with their private details such as house phone. would it affect them?

also, if i am not using the skype in my n900, let say if i logged back into my pc and started to delete some contacts, would that change my contacts in my n900 as well?

Thank you.

Re: Contact merge

No, merging is on-the-N900-only. I'm not sure what would happen if you deleted contacts on Skype.

Re: Contact merge

I merge all my contacts (skype, Gtalk, and googleVoice) the merging is only on the n900. If you delete a contact on the n900 (Skype, or google) It will delete it from the server. If you have two way sync going. (Skype/Gtalk is two way) I know....I have done it before...

you mean if i delete it a contact in my n900, when i logon to my skype in on PC. the contact will be deleted? right?

but how does this work. if i merged a contact in n900 will not change my contact info in skype on PC, but if i deleted any contact, than it will change in skype on PC. isnt it strange?

Re: Contact merge

Think of the merge as a container. Thats all it is. A few different accounts/user names under one roof.
So I could have Joeuser on skype, joeuser on gtalk, and joeuser on sip.
They are all the same user, just different services.
When you merge them it just consolidates. It does not change any of the user info.
So when you look in your contacts book you will see the the user name. (the container) When you click on the user you will see the different service that user is on. (Skype/Gtalk/Sip) They are still separate services.
However if you click a contact and you "have two way sync" it will delete it from the server. Like I said. Skype is two way. Think of the n900 as your pc. The n900 will react the same way your PC will.

So as for your question...."if i merged a contact in n900 will not change my contact info in skype on PC" no because you are not modifying the skype account. You are creating a container locally on the n900.
When you delete a merged user (You will be deleting a container and everything in it)
Does that make sense or did I confuse you more....Sorry, but I'm not very good at verbalizing how things work.

yep quite so. Every contact from every im, phonebook, whatever is listed. then you hav eto do the hard work of merging them. After that it's all good :) And if you delete a contact, it will be deleted from servers if you have a skype contact merged into it, since you can't both have the contact and not have the contact. If you want to remove the phonenumber or such, just delete that detail from the contact.
