[Maemo 5] Possible to create app to scan UPC code & show lowest $$ in 1km radius?

I know there was some talk to create a barcode app for the n810, but what I'm envisioning is an app for the n900 that allows the user to scan a UPC code in a store, and the app would pull the product info from the web, display all the stores in an X km radius around you, and their prices for the product you scanned.

I would be willing to work with someone to develop this (I can help with graphic design).

Thoughts?

im pretty sure i downloaded an app from one of the repos that could read barcodes or at least convert them into thde number associated with it. i guess it is possible to x reference that code with some sort of database that holds prices etc but im not sure what ot who would have price data and location data for bar code data..

I just grabbed the closest UPC to me and googled the code. Google recognized it as a UPC code and gave me this link: http://www.upcdatabase.com/item/082966212727. So essentially, "http://www.upcdatabase.com/item/*" would allow you to look up any UPC code, and then you can cross reference that with a Froogle search for the product name.

Or, as I just realized, you can simply look up the UPC code in Froogle!

That's why you have an n900, so you can multitask!

You got a graphic designer right here, and I think you just volunteered to be the project manager, so all we need is a coder. Or maybe we can get away without one? ;)

If i were you i would consider posting in the brainstorming section or ask for this post to be moved there? I TH?INK that would be the right section to start off with.

As project manager i suggest you sack me and get hold of some guys who know the ins and outs of the N900.

Its a great idea (even though not new as I think my mate has it on his eyedrone-phone and would make one of the sweetest apps to be released on the N900.

Ill organise the boozer and lay on a few rounds down the pub when you get it released! :)

Good luck matey

haha good idea. i originally got this idea from the android, and with my background in geospatial data i think it's an ingenious start to linking maps to data. we need more location-based apps on the n900!!

You could input the barcode data into google shopping. I noticed quite a large number of barcodes are integrated into it. just input the number from the barcode in the search field and it will display relevant products. Just not locally.
