Best way to buy N900 in UK

Hi - I want to buy an N900 in the UK.

I think my preferred method would be to buy one from nokiaretail unlocked and sim free, the reasons for this are that I may be living in mainland Europe in the near future and I am happy with my current mobile network provider (Orange), but buying the handset is still pretty expensive (anyone got an idea when the price will drop?)

The other option would be to go with Vodaphone, but there cheapest tarrif is £35 for a 24 month contract - with way more minutes and texts than I need - has anyone got a cheaper contract through a Vodaphone shop? I only really need 200mins per month, 200txt's and unlimited internet.

I really want to buy through a physical retailer rather than having such an expensive (that could potentailly not work) item posted to me.

Any suggestions/comments gratefully recieved! :)

To second Nipper - don't buy them direct from Voda as they are a lot cheaper from both CPW and Nokia Directly (still 'Mobile Phones Direct'?)

£30/month for 18 months with all that is a good deal for a free handset imho. That's a £480 total value and you may be able to sell the contract for something when you leave. Total cost of ownership maybe £400? I think you can get them on eBay for a bit less than that, and amazon for around that price... But from a shop in person has it's advantages as you mention.

My last upgrade with Voda got me £25/month for 600mins, unlimited text and data, and a free N900, for a 24month contract. That's £5/mo lower rental, and more everything than I had before :)

Seems they thought I was leaving, because they can't read - I sent an email to cancel an old data sim, and they somehow got the accounts confused.

Worked out nicely, I now have a spare N900 on the shelf :D

I bought mine direct from a Vodafone shop a few months ago for £450 SIM free. Made sense as Nokia online was £499 - even with cashback from QuidCo Nokia was more expensive. Even now Nokia is £479.

Thanks Marlon - when you bought directly from a Vodafone shop, was it unbranded, without all the vodaphone stuff installed? presumably it was not in any way locked to the Vodaphone network?

Network locking is not possible on the N900.
