How much kilobytes does gps uses?
I want to know cuz i don't want to waste my credit for nothing. If it doesn't uses a lot, i can just buy megabytes and have like free navigation.

Re: How much kilobytes does gps uses?
For network-location and for A-GPS, which both makes getting the location data MUCH faster than GPS alone, it takes about 2 - 10 kBytes per one "cold" fix. Usually you'll get 10 to 20 of those during the day, if you take photos (with location tagging turned on) or navigate.
[Actually this info I base on my experiences with N95. Haven't tried with N900 so much yet, how many cold fixes it will make during the "normal" day abroad.] The maps you surely want to pre-load to the internal memory or to microSD-card. |
Re: How much kilobytes does gps uses?
GPS itself uses no airtime traffic as it is purely recieving a radio signal. The assisted GPS system on the N900 comes into play if you enable network positioning. The N900 send some information to the remote server to help determine the satellites that should be looked for. Without assisted GPS a lock takes longer but shouldn't cost anything.

AGPS by itself uses very little data. If using Ovi maps however be aware of bug 9594.

This also explains why I went out of credits one I was trying out Ovi maps. Please people: vote on that bug! |
