Isn't the n900 secure?
 

At my hostel, both cell phones and laps are banned - which is why i use the n900 as my all in one device. Besides its easier to hide it this way.

But today morning my warden caught the n900 when i absent mindedly left it on my table and went for breakfast. But i had locked the device and that was kind of a relief for me cuz this guy had a history of trying to crack caught mobile devices with a help of a professor from coll and check out the data within.

I got back the phone by evening after paying a fine, and what shocked me was that the phone was unlocked. Now how did he manage that? I though the n900 was secure being linux and all ...:confused: The only good that came out of this is that he accidentally clicked the record button (recaller) and i got a 30 min clip which helped me find out who the cracker professor was. But does anyone here know how he did it so that i can make sure it doesnt happen again if they get their hands on my device again.

well my first port of call would be to qute the data protection act at him, demand the fine back, make sure you've backed up ur evidence oof course, and tell him if he ever touches ur beloved hardware again u'll break his fingers! :)

That wouldnt work because that guy is a HOD, and i was breaking rules in the first place. According to the rule book, my n900 would've been auctioned !!

Hospitals, military bases, prisons... and apparently some college hostels.

I have no idea what a HOD is, but unless you live in some really bass ackwards place the correct term for "confiscating something you legally own then selling it" is "theft".

Now I'm all sorts of curious where this story takes place. Where would possessing a banned item entitle an authority to open said item and invade the owners privacy? That's like two wrongs equalling a right.

It would, of course, depend on local laws. But I think the n900 owner would have a good case for invasion of privacy. Confiscating a banned item is one thing. Fiddling with it is something quite else.
