Window Maker ROX Now Available
First of all like I always say, I am not responsible for myself much less your device, follow these instructions at your own risk. I have only tested this on a new flash, if it breaks any other software currently available or the n800, I am unaware.
My reccomendation is run this as a secondary OS using bootmenu. If you apply this on top of my old tar it "SHOULD" not cause any problems, but I have not tested that. Also if you install this on an already setup system, I can not gaurentee it will work, but it should. Backup anything you need, before playing with this, just to be safe. flash new image and create backup. Refer to here for proper documentation on how to do this. http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ead.php?t=4053 Installation Now that you just finished flashing and copying it to the mmc with tar - dont use rsync, it has a bug You will need GNU tar and bunzip2 to undo this http://penguinbait.com/tar or http://penguinbait.com/tar.gz and http://penguinbait.com/bzip2 or http://penguinbait.com/bzip2.gz un-tar/un-bzip ROX4.tar.bz2 in root ( / ) sudo su - cd / tar jxvf /path/to/ROX4.tar.bz2 boot new OS run through Nokia first time setup connect to network start application manager click browse installable applications refresh package list (should happen automatically if never run) install python2.5-runtime Your Done!! :) I would reccommend reading entire post before proceeding ;) I applied the tar to Fresh Flash image and then booted up and installed python. After that WM worked no problem. I applied the tar on top the the flash before booting it for the first time. Then I started the application manager and installed the rest of the following software. The tar will overwrite /etc/sudoers and /etc/apt/sources.list. When it boots up the repositories you need to install the following software are already setup. These are not a must, but it I reccomend it. All of these apps have links inside a menu, so if you do not install them you can not run them? install becomeroot (Note sudo ALL=ALL NOPASSWD is in the /etc/sudoers already from tar) install osso-xterm install mplayer install minimo install fmradio install kismet Install ssh, close application manager, start xterm, install ssh sudo su - apt-get install ssh Desktop / Taskbar settings locked by default / Must unlock to change wallpaper / taskbar / Desktop Icons from the WM menu select the following Menu > utils > Unlock Desktop Taskbar This will unlock the desktop and taskbar so it will accept new items, The lock is in case you accidentally drag them there. You only need to do this to place items on the Desktop or This is all controlled from /home/user/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/ROX-Filer pan_Default = Taskbar shortcut settings pb_Default = Desktop shortcut Settings It will by default come up locked. You can unlock it when you want to make a change on the desktop. You can leave it unlocked but everytime you mis-drag something you need to edit files to remove it. I will come up with a better solution, once I can completly get ROX to function. Note if it is locked it will still put shortcuts on the desktop and taskbar, and wallpaper, but it will error, but restarting will remove them because they can not be saved. you can also restore all the original setting for ROX by running sudo restoreROX.sh or restore WM settings by running sudo restoreWM.sh -- NOTE, this will kill WM or ROX and replace startup files, and reboot. Power cord should not be plugged in while doing this, or it will not reboot properly. just in case you screw it up to badly You can also manually remove invalid shortcuts from Desktop or Taskbar by editing those files directly and restarting ROX, there is a shortcut to restart rox on desktop 2. ROX can be killed from xkill, by clicking on the desktop. If you click on wmapps though it will kill wmaker which would make you need to ssh to start WM, or press shutdown button, and shutdown, and reboot. Other problems I have run into. I changed the middle button on the top of the n800 to be window maximize. If you maximize the hildon keyboard, and you can not minimize it. Shutdown completely and boot to hildon and run something with the keyboard in it. This will reset the window size. This only happened to me once, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Other Notes wmnet. this runs by default and monitors eth0, I made a script that changes it between wlan0 and ppp0 so it will work with DUN. This is done by double clicking on wmnet. wmnet is the bottom wmapp on the main desktop on the left side. It shows incomming and outgoing trafic on a graph realtime. some of the things that are were included which wget ftp telnet ping gftp gaim xkill bzip tar esd Wallpaper Hack aterm with transparency more wmapps - wmpiki - asmix - wmnet - 770 USERS libSM.so was the only library that I heard anyone complain about. My n800 already has this library, to make things easier (not sure if it will ??) I included the libSM from the n800 in the /usr/local/lib, while this should not cause any issues for n800 users, if it does not work for the 770 (my guess is it will) then make sure if you have to install them, you remove the two files in /usr/local/lib I was going to have some people test first, thanks if you offered, but it made it so I would release the tarball later, and the last one seemed to go fairly smooth. So with some people bugging me to release another one, here you go. Oh yeah, one last thing, I have not really looked into, but there is a new startup sound prior to the old one. Its kinda cool, the old one still plays also. PS, Have Fun. I put this up on comcast free pages, not on my modem, do not know if it will be any faster. The file if about 23MB, uncompresses about 95MB. Comcast only gives you 25MB, so the next release will probably require a new home, any suggestions? I wish I could use my gmail space. https://home.comcast.net/~penguinbait/ROX6.tar.bz2 bzip2 and tar needed to run this on n800/770 are posted above |
Re: Window Maker ROX Now Available
This is so cool, and I´m eager to set my teeth into this but...
Is it possible to install over an existing filesystem including installed apps, instead of a fresh flash? Are we able to lookup the installed applications somehow and sparc them of from there? These might not work anyhow but would it be no harm, really? |
Re: Window Maker ROX Now Available
I have not personally had time to try this (yeah, my N800 is dead again =/) but I went ahead and posted this on my academic space, which has effectively unlimited bandwidth to throw around.

Certainly missed that one in between the other stuff, and with that kind of posting you're surely entitled to quote yourself!

Re: Window Maker ROX Now Available
I've yet to be able to get it to boot, but I don't think it's a WindowMaker problem.

Re: Window Maker ROX Now Available
I am looking forward to trying this, but don't want to be in the first wave, quite.

Re: Window Maker ROX Now Available
rox seems to work, when I use the shorcut to switch it comes up with matchbox still the windowmanager, and that even makes an interesting environment.
but, when I try to reboot to windowmaker, it crashes/reboots on startup. I might be missing a package or something, maybe. ---------- EDIT: that's my bad. forgot to run ldconfig. |
