Help with Ubuntu? Thinking of installing for first time...

Hey all!

I have a Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz processor machine with 2 gigs of ram.

Has extra graphics card (128 mb) NVidia.

It is a desktop. Runs Win XP Pro currently.

I am thinking of wiping and installing Ubuntu from scratch. I have multiple machines for different purposes so I thought I would give this a try to start to explore Linux.

Obviously, I have NO Linux experience except for my n810 that I have have for over a year.

Anyone willing to help guide me through this process incase something goes wrong?

I just thought that with all the Cloud apps that are so useable now, what difference does it really make what OS you are using?

Feedback?

thanks...

Go here to download the CD image. The installation should be straight forward. If you have problems, spit it here and plenty of people here are willing to assist you. Good luck. Welcome to UBUNTU

Well if you are going to do a complete wipe, you should not have any problems. The installer is really easy to use but the partitioning might be a small hassle if not doing a complete wipe and you don't have any prior experience. Remember that by default ubuntu uses a different filesystem such as ext4. If you have more than one drive at the moment (eg C: and D: harddrive partitions) check ubuntuforums for more info as unix OS's have a different structure for partitions.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is coming a the end of the month. You might want to wait for that instead.

That being said, go ahead and try it now !

Have you used windows before? If so I would recommend first try kubuntu

Here is one guide:
http://books.google.com/books?id=kHL...age&q=&f=false
"pocket" version...makes me laugh ~160 pages, but just look for what is important. Quite a lot extra stuff there.

.edit
And oh. Test stuff form live-cd's. You do not have to installm but of course please remember that some apps load quite a lot when used from cd.

Essential Ubuntu add-ons (a personal opinion) :

1) Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto

2) Wine for Ubuntu and Ubuntu derivatives

Oh yeah I almost forgot about that. Instead of a live CD try to make a "live USB key".

instruction

I guess we covered every part of it now. Good luck !
