Can the N900 use Wine in order to run Window apps?

Did google search but not sure if the n900 is able to run this since im totally new to linux. I have played around with backtrack 4 because a friend dare me to crack his wep network, but that has nothing to do with programing. Anyway I'm just wondering if I can download the .deb files and be able to run some windows app.

a simple search could give you the answer of this question.
It's been mentioned a lot of times:

The answer is no.

Wine is not en emulator. You can't run Windows with an ARM processor.

no this is not possible. Windows applications are compiled for x86 processors and cannot run on ARM, the type of CPU the N900 has. WINE, as the name says is not an emulator, it is merely windows libraries for linux, thus it only works on x86 PC's

The answer is probably. A simple search will show you this. I need time to set up a chroot or similar ld-linux.so jail using pre NTPL x86 libs and wine binary for qemu (user mode) to run. Expect about P90 speeds or better if loads of system calls are invovled in the execution of code as that runs arm native. Graphically X11 stuff is fast and native too. Maths stuff would be slower.

This was done several years ago on PPC. I think I'm the only one working on this on ARM

Thanks for all of ur quick reply and explanations. I'm so addicted to this maemo.org forum that I usually spend hours reading post of app and function and trying to learn how linux works.

I wonder if it would be possible to get the N900 to run Windows Mobile apps, since they also run on an ARM processor? It would be kinda like WINE, but designed for mobile processors... just a thought?

Yes that is possible Mail_E36, for example the HTC HD2 supports that already. It is basically also possible to emulate a X86 CPU in a decent speed (P1 133Mhz~) but that requires a lot of work.

There is a wine for arm project on the winehq site and winCE support is a specific goal. The only other use it would be would be win32 api development compiled to arm

The answer to this is now most definitely YES! I can run progman, clock, notepad, pscp and probably loads more. Unfortunately I didn't have greay success running Pandemonium.exe it just graphically didn't update. Might need .wine/config updates to force x11 driver rather than sdl. I'll be posting videos later
