Navit or Maemo Mapper?

I apologise fr my ignorance in advance.. but could some one spell out in layman's language what the pro's and con's of Navit V's Maemo Mapper are?

for instance: Navit I need to emulate an image file to run debian to be able to run Navit as I understand. Is that the case with Mapper also?

which is easier to download maps & voice instructions.. etc..

I saw that the beta-2 was in extras-testing but the beta-4 was still in extra-devils.. surely it should be the other way around (but what do I know..)

has any one tried both and have a preference..?
