My n900 is making me myopic
 

I am not losing my ability to think broadly nor am I planting the seed for a class action lawsuit but would rather bring attention to the screen size problem. For a little history on the issue, all I ever wanted was my Palm T3 to support 640 x 480 screen resolution in the same size envelope for better browsing, the n810 blue my mind that it manages 800 x 480 is a descent form factor. My n810 touch screen died so I didn't hesitate to get an n900 when it was available, that aside, I have voiced my opinions here many times.

The new things I could do with Linux and the screen resolution changed my working habits, i would like to think for the better although my wife hates to see the device.

So I now use it quite a bit and I really have to strain my eyes when using RDP and the other web Browse apps, and I find after logging in doing a 10 minute task I find when I look up my eyes are rather ill adapted for general use it takes a few minutes to focus. That didn't really bother me until today when I noticed that when reading white text on a black background the text is blurry I can't seem to focus unless I now go right up close to the screen.

I panicked and though I would share it with the beloved n900 community in the hope that Nokia may read the words: I love my n900 but the screen is too small. Please make it bigger its affecting the overall quality of my life. FYI (the n810 is what I would call the perfect DPI to screen real-estate )

Umm, physical dimensions of the device is about the only concrete fact that you should have seen before you bought it. Nokia has been a bit fuzzy about certain features missing, but something like overlooking the physical dimensions before you purchase means that the blame totally falls on you.

That's like if someone went to buy a 2-seater sports car, and then was upset that the car did not come with the same amount of space as an SUV... lol

Sell it and buy a device with a larger screen. Even if Nokia created an N900 version with a larger screen, you'd still have to buy the new one (totally hypothetical of course)

I own both an N810 and N900 and agree with your preference of the larger screen size. The N810 is not too big, but not too small. I think the N900 has a large screen for a phone (to hold up to your ear), but is also a very impressive device.

It's a tough call.

I'm sorry to hear of your issue, but I think your title is a little inaccurate. I'm rather certain it's not a N900 specifically that is making you myopic.

Sorry, I only came here to figure out what myopic means. Did you ever consider that maybe you're just getting old?

Just to clarify to one of the replies above: there are a few other factors that contribute to this, not just the screen size itself: resolution and font size.

I suppose you can make a rough estimation of the pixel density of n900 from your experience with the n810, but then again the screen size difference is not that much. I actually raised the same concerns on the weeks leading to n900's release, but one of the senior members here whom had an early n900 loaner insisted that "you won't notice the screen difference (from n8x0).". Well, i beg to differ. I think he was experiencing new gadget euphoria and he didn't quite realize that he was holding the device closer to his eyes or something.

Font size was trickier to determine, since different apps may use different text size and we didn't have access to maemo5 to test.

Anyway, i share the OP's concerns on this matter.

I've found it depended on how you browsed the web with the n800/n810. I usually forgot to fullscreen it, so the N900 browsing the web is about the same size. But when it comes to reading PDFs or annotating via Xournal it's definantly noticable.

Am I missing something or has the N900's physical screen size and screen resolution been known for at least a couple of months before the thing even came out? And it takes 5th grade math to determine the DPI with that information. And there have been countless videos posted of the UI (which included fonts,etc).

Imho it's one thing to calculate a number and another to estimate how you will react to it.

ie: if you're currently comfortable with the n900, how much smaller screen size (in %) do you think you can tolerate? Not to mention, you'll have to take into account any ui/ux changes that may be implemented to accomodate the screen change.
