Hack Maps Application

2 Attachment(s)
So... browsing along through and I stumble upon this post by spag a few days ago. He gave a hack to allow maps to always stay locked at North. So it got me thinking, what other hacks can we have for Maps?

I have so far kinda changed the colours of maps to blue to fit in with my theme :D (by kinda, theres still a bit of green sometimes in places, but i only change one set of images at /usr/share/nokia-maps/html/medos/images/touch)

Just wondering what else can he hack in it? Maybe make a full theme? I did notice while snooping around that there is a few items relating to S60 devices, maybe we can even take S60 code and transfer it here?

What do you think guys?

Included are some pictures :D

Edit: Ohhhh Remember you can screw up the Maps application if your not careful. Make backups etc etc

Well seems there's very little interest in the subject. So I guess I'll just tamper with the files alone. If anyone is interested, I've uploaded a zip file with the images just changed to blue from green. Nothing special yet, but I do plan to change some of the icons to give it a better look and feel. Included are some screenshots.

To install, just copy the new images over. I did it through WinSCP. Make sure you make backups before changing anything.

Thanks mate. Yea, it seems your right, most people are using sygic, which is a tonne better. I'll probably still persist with modding Maps though. It doesn't seem so bad for those quick directions once in a while, plus its free :P

How did you get Maps to look white and blue?

And so are your hacks aiming to make the visual experience better or what is your ultimate goal? :)

I'd like to see Ovi Maps used to run Google Maps with Maemo Geolocation and stuff. Kind of use the functinoality of Maps but re-work it to be a little zippier and bug-free. :)

Well, a bloke can dream, right? It's not like I could contribute in code or anything else... :P

Hi,
Can you include instructions in your Zip file?

Also can you include the mod'd js file for the orientation fix? I never got that patch stuff to work from the "spins" thread, and it was my thread!

Ohh, and your Blue theme looks a Ton better BTW!

I edited all the images with green in photoshop and changed the hue to +100 making them turn from green to blue. I then moved the new images to my phone and overwrote the existing ones. So far its just a simple green to blue change.

I'd ultimately like to have a look at the underlying code for Maps. Maybe add my own bits of code to say give the option to keep it always locked to north etc. I doubt we can do anything major with it since it looks quite complex, but any small change for the better is good i guess.

I've uploaded what I hope is a version of the nokia.maps.js that will allow it to always stay North, but only when the red marker is moving on a route. I didn't want to set it always North incase you wanted to rotate the map later on for any reason. I sadly can't test it properly since its past 1am here and walking around the home didn't change the GPS position. I'll try have a better test tomorrow. If you want to try play around with the file, the section you need to fiddle with is this (with the section i added in bold, just 0*)
Code:

{if(typeof aPosition.orientation=="string"){orientation=this._ROTATIONS[aPosition.orientation]}else{orientation=0*(aPosition.orientation+360)%360}
Changing the orientation to always 0 in both areas (if true and else) will cause it to never rotate including using the rotate disc thingy.

there is a fix for that...just search for sygic mod or sygic problems thread, and there is a solution for that...after you change the settings (i think it was something like positionfilter - false, antialising - false, and one other value to 0) the maps works perfectly, and also is very accurate!

Just read one of them threads, and you'll know exactly what to change...the above settings are from top of my head, hence its you should find the correct settings.

Good Luck!
