What sort of car are you driving that has IR access to start the car? Lexus?

Probably not, but it might be useful to at least know what car you have...

Yes but it's not something the N900 can do innately that any other product couldn't, neither can your car in its default ability probably).

For example, people have done hacks where they attach a cheap mobile phone to their car's ignition so they can call the number to start it (or send a text, etc..). Likewise it's probably possible via bluetooth. But it's not something that can be easily done without some knowledge of how a car works.

it could get interesting if you could unlock and start cars with IR haha

YES!!! It can be done. Im an auto tech and there are a few ways this can be done. telematics automotive automation. Im working on this now with the n900. :) First:

1) relays must be used injunction with the ignition system

2) when it comes down to control you have these options

a. arduino to control the relays via N900 wifi, bluetooth

b. simentry gsm module. check out website www.sim-entry.com this will activate - deactivate the alarm system

the hardest part of this would be that a program must be written to communicate between the n900 and arduino the simentry module is simply controlled by a sms from n900 which is native to the phone.

What you can do is file your n900 to the shape of your car key, give the customised n900 to someone and then say "Go over there and start my car".

(a) The car can be started with your n900 and
(b) can be done remotely.

Have you tried wearing somethink skimpy like a thong or maybe a pole-dance?

:)

Ok I should be serious.

You would need some kind of hardware hack for the engine computer?
I know that most(all?) remote-control car alarms transmit an encrypted key (which changes everytime it's used) to the computer.

Interesting idea though!

i have a plymouth prowler. i found out that alarms commect to the ignition thru the ignition key. they also use diffrent types of signals and now using bluetooth to open doors an open windows. the alatms use thier own hub station so the car computer is not used . i will look into it .

I think the OP has seen the iPhone advert with the app that appears to unlock a car?

Zipcar actually does unlock the car for real. I'm guessing that the car needs to be customised though.
