In a nutshell, "Modest" is the name of the email client on the Maemo platform.

is it internal service to receive emails like blackberry? and should I keep always connecting to the internet to receive messages?

Do not even talk about blackberry email client and ...... in same context. Modest is by its own name modest. Think about it like proof of concept that N900 can send and receive emails.

But yeah. It can receive&send messages but that's about it.
