Can't scroll text file in FB Reader/Nokia N900
 

Hi everyone!

I just got a Nokia N900, absolutely amazing so far, but I'm not having much luck with either of the major Ebook readers which is an absolute necessity for me. The books I'm trying to read are only in simple text files.

FB Reader can load the text file, but I can't scroll the pages. The forward/back buttons are simply grayed out. I tried several text files, and an RTF, but no luck. I can enter page numbers by hand and go to them, after which I can move between them, but that's pretty troublesome.

I also tried MGutenberg E-Book Reader, which opens and scrolls the file just fine, but doesn't quite go "full screen" like FB Reader and lacks a few other options. However, I'm also wondering if there might be a way to have a shortcut on the desktop automatically launch, not just an ebook reader, but a specific book in a specific reader.

...i've used both and my experience with FB Reader is -like you- that one can only go page by page by "tapping" the top (pg bck) or bottom (pg fwd) of the screen (so no scrolling)... but with MGutenberg i've found i can go full page just by "tapping" the center of the touchscreen once...

...about the shortcuts, i've noticed that FB Reader usually opens the last opened book, but that's as far as can think of a "shortcut"... maybe other users have other ideas... :)

Press the volume button on top of the N900 to go to the next or last page; is that what you mean?

FBreader automatically starts with the book you were reading last.

Thanks for the full screen tip with MGutenberg !

When MGutenberg loads, it clearly shows "Looking for books" for a moment before showing nothing underneath. There must be a way to make books show up there. In the help files it says to put the books with the following directory structure:

Documents/Books/Author/Author - Name [Language]

for it to pick them up, but I've tried that and no luck so far!

Ah, of course! I totally forgot about those buttons, though I suppose it does make far more sense then having to hit the "back/forward" buttons on the screen, I'm guessing those are for some sort of bookmarking/chapter indexing?

Touch scrolling (like MGutenberg) would be nice, but for now I'm quite happy with this! Thanks a bunch! =D

I'll also keep playing with the other program to see if I can't get it to show a list of books when I open it.

Indeed, will FBReader support touch scrolling like MGutenbrg?

MGutenberg is awesome...and I ended up in this thread as well since I could not figure out how to flip pages on FBReader - it really is completely unintuitive on N900.
