Access ubuntu shared folders
 

Hi,
I have been an occasional user of desktop Linux for many years, but am a little disappointed that my N900 picked up my win 7 shares without me having to do a thing, but when I boot into Ubuntu, the shares set up to the same folders (win 7 video folder is linked into Ubuntu video folder which is shared), Media player will not see a bloody thing. Why is win 7 working out of the box, but my Linux shares are non visible??

I am completely prepared for the fact that I have done somethting very stupid, or missed something very easy, lol.

I have been trying again today, have cleared out all shares, started again but still the same problem. I have looked through the posts to do with sharing on these boards and others, but all seem to be trying to access full shares through file manager or access N900 as a share from PC. All I want is my media files to be shared in Media Player, will try and get some screenies up later of what I mean.

I do not completly understand what you mean but when i wanted to connect to my ubuntu machine. I first had to edit the /etc/fstab file. After it discovers the n900 automatic.

If you run "fdisk -l" in terminal on your ubuntu-box and look for the "n900-partition" you could mount it. In my case it was on sdb. So i ran "sudo mount /dev/sdb".

Sharing folders can be done in many ways. Windows 7 is sharing media files via UPnP which the N900 handles out of the box. On Ubuntu, folders are shared via either SMB or NFS, which are both supported on the N900, but don't work out of the box (see the wizardmounter app for accessing SMB or NFS shares).
You can also run an UPnP server on Ubuntu for sharing media (e.g. fuppes, MediaTomb, Rhythmbox with plugin, etc.).

I believe that W7 advertises the shares through cifs & uPnp, on Ubuntu you shared folders are just advertised through cifs. You probably have to find or enable uPnp on your Ubuntu.

I just found that http://mediatomb.cc/ it seems to support Ubuntu :)

I might give it a try actually, I'll let you know :)

Sorry I can't test it for now, the MediaTomb package is broken in Lucid Beta2 :/

If had some issues sharing a SMB share on Ubuntu. Here is how I solved it: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...8&postcount=95

I believe that it's related to Unix extensions enabled on Samba, but I didn't investigate any further.

Nop, nothing to do with that I believe, the SMB/CIFS shares are already working, what is missing is them being advertised through uPNP
