Mer on N900 - DUMMIES guide? Help? (FOR AN IDIOT!)
Hi,
I'm trying to boot Mer off my SD card. I need an absolute *****S guide. Even how to format (what commands, sizes... everything? :( )SD card. I did see a link in the Mer guide so you can install Mer to SD FROM THE N900 ITSELF... Has anyone tried it this way (and had it work on SD)? "In case you don't have a card reader or a PC with a Linux installation around, you can do this installation completely on the N900 itself (after all, Maemo is a Linux distribution). You do need to use GNU tar in stead of the Busybox version in Maemo. You can get it the binary from the deb file inhere: http://repository.maemo.org/pool/fremantle/free/t/tar/ BTW, it can be installed onto a 500Mb partition, but there will be barely any room left." I ultimate plan is to have Mer (LXDE), Android and Easy Debian all installed to an 8GB SD Card. |

But I must say its much more convenient - only you need to set up qole's repository (you can find it here on the forum) and install gtar (gnu tar for maemo) ... and I also use cfdisk to partition the microSD card ... Anyway, still trying to make it boot up ... |

I'd more ask why you'd like to boot it though?

Basically, Mer on N900 was a proof of concept - it is really slow in it's basic configuration on N900 as it does not have 3d acceleration.
If you want to play with alternative OS'es, look into MeeGo or Android. |

And Meego is without GUI, right? Thats the reason why I ended up with Mer .... :) ADD: You said Mer has been just a proof of concept - Im courious, what did it prove? Was it something like a "test-box" for creating something like Mer from scratch, after testing its weak points? |
Re: Mer on N900 - DUMMIES guide? Help? (FOR AN IDIOT!)
I want to get Mer booting (kind of).
FEDORA 12 is available but it uses just about all of the same instructions as Mer to get running. I can't figure it out. I have 2 partions VFAT and EXT3 and all my Fedora setup seems flawless and in EXT3, my Bootmenu "script" I made is fine, setup for P2.. Just get no sign of life. I have disabled Watchdog, put N900 into R(&)D mode. Just no help.. How IMPORTANT is the Kernel that is mentioned in the wiki guide (Jabba). Does Titans kernel support the required features? Why Fedora? Same as above member - Why not? I would like Fedora running with full GNOME/KDE because I can, mostly. I would also like to get Android running one day. |
