Losing Internet Connection

After using my N900 for 2 weeks one thing thats really beginning to bug me is the lose of internet when switching from WLAN to 3G.
When I'm at home I use my WLAN connection and thats fine, but when I get to work I need to switch to 3G, and although the phone says its connected, when I try and do anything nothing happens but the 'server not found' error. If I reboot my N900 it works fine, but this is getting a tad old, especially as I go home for lunch so I then have to reboot again after lunch to use it. Any clues as to what I need to do to fix this?

Cheers

BT

Which Maemo software version is this about? 3.2010.02-8?

I sometimes also have this behaviour that my 3G says it's connected but doesn't actually do anything.

Rebooting solves it. But also going off-line (flight mode) and re-enabling the radios.

That's my solution. And a lot quicker then rebooting.

Hinderance indeed. But not as much as other Symbian stuff I had to give up on due to going to N900.

Still loving my n900, although I sometimes feel like a madman preaching in the desert when I'm trying to convince other people of it's virtues.

Is your N900 in "Dual" mode or "3G" only?

Also, when you try this, have you already connected to the Internet via 3G earlier?

As in:

Connect to Internet via 3G - Connect to WiFi - Re-connect via 3G

OR

Connect to WiFi - Connect via 3G

hope that helps,
bernard

The N900 is in dual mode, so it connects to my WLAN whe at home, but will switch to 3G for the rest of the time.
Normal activity is leave the house (WLAN) to go cycling (3G) back home (WLAN) and off to work (3G) - and its while at work I notice it acts up.

What mobile carrier do you use (with country)?

'server not found'
This looks more like a DNS problem than a network problem. Could you, at work, start the XTerminal and, as root, ping www.google.com and see what happens?

If you get the reply "Network unreachable" you really don't have IP connectivity. If it just hangs, use the route command to have a look at the kernel's routing tables.

If this is "just" a case of you not getting the right DNS settings, it's much easier to solve.

When you say Dual Mode you know that means actually 2G OR 3G connectivity, NOT 3G or WiFi?

Use the Personal IP Address settings desktop widget to confirm that you are receiving an IP address when you handover to cellular connectivity.

It could be that you are not creating a PDP context, and therefore not getting an IP address.

Also, when it happens are you connected with 3G or 2G?

I'm not sure how to link threads but it seems to me all these are describing the same behaviour - 3g connection icon shows but connections just time out.

I was wondering whether to raise a bug, but maybe it's best to wait until after PR1.2? Interesting we all decided to raise this almost the same day :-)

No, I don't think those issues are related. Those users seem to have their issues native to cellular connection.

The issue here could be a number of things: a) an issue with the device handing over from WiFi radio to the 3G, or 2G radio b) an issue with the network - if he had a PDP context [1] initially and then swapped to a WiFi network, or if his device is handing over from 2G to 3G, or even something as simple as his network not having 3G coverage where he is.

Those other threads seem to be different.

His problem is described as "lose of internet when switching from WLAN to 3G".

I want to find out if he connecting to 3G only, or connecting to 2G or 3G (whatever is available.)

Hope that helps,
bernard.
