What is the big deal with Flash 10.1?

To anyone experienced enough with flash:

How much could we expect from a GPU-accelerated flash. It probably would boost video playback performance, but how about games?

Is it really that big a deal?

I installed Flash 10.1 for eeePC (linux). Before the installation the laptop played 360i videos without staggering. After the upgrade the laptop could play 480i videos. Barely.

Flash-based HD-video on N900? Donīt get your hopes up...

I'm not holding my breath for it. (meaning, I really could care less...it's not a deal breaker for me if it has it or not). Flash is a resource intensive load of crap, and I'd rather see it disappear on all platforms. I love the cranky posts about it though. I get quite a bit of amusement from some of the threads in this forum of people whining about things.

The problems with Flash is that it is closed source and is not an open standard.

Why is this bad?

1) It goes against the very nature of an open internet. E.g. html, javascript.

2) If flash is not available on your platform then you become locked-out.

3) Flash does not degrade gracefully. You get a message to download it.

4) Related to point 3 I can still browse the web with a text-based browser.

5) It is controlled by one company. They control its direction not a commitee standard.

6) Any decent tools have to be paid for. Generally barrier to entry is high.

A GPU powered flash would be indeed a big performance boost, also for flash games.
