Skype Call Quality
Anyone else suffering with skype call quality issues on both 3G and Wifi?
I've set up a SkypeIn number (now called Skype Online Number I think) and when I have a friend call this number from his mobile it seems the quality his end goes from being great to being really quite terrible where it's just a mash of words and he can't hear what I'm saying - there's no pattern to this. There are a couple of points here though: 1) If this just happened over 3G (I'm with Vodafone UK) then that would at least explain it (maybe traffic filtering etc) and I could look at maybe just using it with Wifi. However, it appears to be just as bad with Wifi - and I have a decent (20Mbit) internet connection at home. 2) Even more frustrating, throughout the entire time he experiences variable call quality, I can hear the feed from his mobile clear as a bell and it never drops. It's as if the packets are being recieved by the n900 fine but not sent so well. I was wanting to use the Skype number for business purposes as a second line to the phone so I'm really hoping to get this sorted. I'm quite willing to install updated packages from devel or test etc. Has anyone experienced this issue? I've had a dig round the forum and it seems a lot of people have perfect call quality and I can't see a huge amount of people having quality issues. So why is mine so bad, even over WiFi? Any ideas? Is it worth going with a different SIP provider and setting this up in the phone? Will it integrate as well as Skype does? Thanks |

Re: Skype Call Quality
Good point malabar. I have just phoned my parent's land-line over Wifi and the quality was fine for a 10 minute call, we both heard every word. More investigation is needed I think.

Re: Skype Call Quality
I just made a video call to my sister and we had constant quality inside the room with the router and even when i walked around the house. it started breaking up when i walked a good distance from the house but we nevel lost contact. I was on for at least 10 minutes.
I was on the opposite side of the house and quality remained the same. edit i guess that's not really the same thing because the call did not go back to a phone number it went to another internet connection:o |
Re: Skype Call Quality
Well, I've always had erratic quality on skype video calls on my PC, so I have really low expectations for the N900.
When right next to my router, wifi video calls over Skype are ok, medium quality. Upstairs, the quality is pretty much unacceptable. The same goes when I try to call from on campus and the routers are physically far away. Choppy sound, miserable video quality. Just voice calls over skype, however, have worked great for me in any situation. I find that skype-to-phone works even better than skype-to-skype. |
Re: Skype Call Quality
Well, I tried it some more this evening phoning landlines, reciving calls from landlines and mobiles and it was bang on! Only thing that changed is a reboot...

Re: Skype Call Quality
I can't get decent phone reception on Skype OR on cellular using 3G or WIFI. I sent my phone in for repair and was issued a new phone. But the same problem exists.
Bristoldave: reboot of your phone or reboot of your wireless? I need reliable Skype to phone calling, but I'm not getting it. My 5800 Xpress phone does perfect Skype to phone and SKype to Skype on WIFI. The only problem is that it doesn't do 3G on T-Mobile so I can't use it away from a LAN or WAN. If there were some way to change the 3G frequency to make it compatible with T-Mobile, I do it in a heartbeat. |
Re: Skype Call Quality
Reboot of the phone. I have to say recently I've experienced much better call quality on Skype, I think some of that was down to updating to PR1.2...
