App to measure velocity

Hi,
Would it be possible to measure the velocity of some objects moving towards N900's proximity sensor?
It would be very useful in physics classes etc.

Just wondering...

Due to the simple requirement from that particular component, I'd think it has limited range and resolution for what you need... (and wouldn't that endanger the n900 unnecessarily in your usecase?)

Why not use the camera instead?
(Measure time needed for object to move between 2 points, measure the distances between points, etc...)

btw, what is the specs of the proximity sensor?
Is it possible to notice only if something is right in front of it, or not?

Well, it was easier to test what I thought.
With shortcutd the distance which makes a difference is about 1 cm.

And yes, it's binary (open/close). No go as a radar, sorry. :)

A sonar app would be interesting. Hmm...

With camera and some pattern recognition, radar could be made.
Program would take two (or more photos) "quickly". Then in the last or in the first photo user would point out two or more points in the object and pattern recognition algorithm would find those points from the other photos, then calculating the speed and acceleration.

edit: or optionally use video if acceleration is an issue.
Oh, and as the previous poster wrote, no need to pattern recognition if just the same paired points are picked in every photo. But if there is many photos and acceleration, then P.R. could get usefull.
