GPS For Hiking

Hi I would like to know what application works best for the use of the GPS during a hiking trip.... I dont expect to find the trails but I would like to able to track an accurate path of the trail I have taken and then save it. I come to this request after getting lost on a hiking trip and having to use the GPS on my N900 to get back. Thanks

You could use Maep.

Enable tracking:

Application Menu (bar at the top) > Track > Capture

Use the Virtual Earth Hybrid Map: Map list ( < arrow in the bottom right corner) > Virtual Earth Hybrid.

Of course, this is only useful if you're able to figure out where you're going before you get there (Or if you have a data plan), since you need to view the area to download the maps. (I'm sure there's a manual way, but I haven't figured it out yet.)

I think eCoach can do the same thing (and also track fitness related info), but I haven't really used it at all.

EasyPark also might be able to do the job, but I'm not sure about that, either.

Or AGTL, but again, no experience here.

I would also suggest using mapper/mappero the major advantage is that you can download maps off-line in a very easy fashion (select a bounding rectangle and set zoom levels) for most major maps google openstreetmap.

Someone hides a box wiht some stuff in it and posts the GPS coordinates at geocaching.com

Somenelse downloads the coordinates and tries to find the box

Remember those scavenger hunts as a kid?

Pretty much the same concept, except much bigger scale.

GPS instead of a clue sheet
The world instead of a backyard
Canisters instead of toys and candy (although some people leave trinkets, it's uncommon, and very frowned upon to leave food).

Basically, you go around and leaving your mark on geocaches that you find on websites like geocaching.com
