2 different questions on Maemo Mapper
 

1 I would like to use ad-hoc maps (jpg files) in MM for logging works (as in woods). Is it possible? and are there any instructions on how to set up the directory structure correctly? In my case I'm hoping it is just a matter of correctly naming the folders leading to my jpg file. (But I must admit it would seem just a bit too easy to name a zoom directory, a lat directory and a long directory to get it to work correctly...)

2 I have been experimenting with the Google Satellite repository. It works fine where I am (Belgium) but other repositories seem to give nothing or very little. My problem is that when I try to download the maps on to the mmc card I just get error messages ("check internet connection and/or the repository url"). Sometimes I can see a directory structure on the mmc card but no maps. All I have done is to change the "Cache dir" under the "Manage repositories..." menu.

Otherwise my first two days with the i-Blue737 has been very fun! (Took 8 days including custom to get to Belgium from Samson.)

It's possible, but not easy. Maemo Mapper expects 256x256 pixel images in the mercator projection. If your jpg files are bigger than 256x256, then you'll have to split it up. The center of each image has to have a particular latitutde and longitude, and each image is named (and placed in the directory hierarchy) according to that location (along with its zoom level). See this post for a brief description of how the directory structure works.

It's really not trivial, to the point that it's practically not worth trying to use ad-hoc maps without some tool to convert those ad-hoc maps to the right format. Such tools may exist, but I'm not familiar with them, so I don't know how or how well they work.

The "sample" repositories (retrieved when you press the "Download" button on the "Manage Repositories" dialog) are based on real map services, i.e. maps.google.com or local.live.com (Virtual Earth). If those web services have good coverage of Belgium, then your use of them in Maemo Mapper should have identical coverage. If not, there may be a bigger problem, perhaps requiring the use of a proxy.

Thanks for the info on how the maps are put together in the file structure. This looks interesting... If I get around to splitting my map I'll certainly let you know.

I was a bit unclear with my second problem which is that when I try to switch and store the maps on the mmc card, the download doesn't work anymore, not even from Google Satellite which works flawlessly when I store the maps under the normal document folder.

Ah. My apologies; I misunderstood your explanation. It's interesting that the directory structure gets created, but not the files themselves...

Of course, make sure you have free space on the MMC card. And make sure you're specifying the right MMC card (mmc1 vs. mmc2, if you're using an N800).

Which file system is the MMC card formatted in? The de facto standard, VFAT?

Are there spaces in the cache directory, or other special characters? Spaces should work fine, but I ask just in case - some file systems may not allow spaces, like some variants of FAT16. You can try the root directory of the MMC card, if you're not sure.

I don't know what file system is on this "Transcend 1GB" mmc card I just bought for my Nokia 770. There is a space in the name "Memory card" in the file manager, but I have the feeling that under the hood, the paht is /media/mmc1, i.e without any space.

Anyway, I saw a post on how to partition and format the card so I'll install xterm etc and will try to do this and then retry to stor the maps on the card.

This morning I noticed something weird. I had Open Street as the only repository alternative?? (The Google maps were still there on my file system thoug but nowhere to manage them in MM... Maybe time for a reinstall... I do run the OS 2006 3.2006.49-2)
