Plz Help: N900 Sluggish and Battery Problem
Hi everyone, I have a N900 and it has developed a huge snag and I don't know what to do, may be you guys can guide me. I am not Linux expert by any chance but just a normal user who tries to do stuff from all the enlightening posts on maemo.org
The problem is, I installed PR 1.2 after flashing the phone and after that the phone worked fine for like 15 days. After that, I got my GPRS plan activated and from that point onwaards whenever I tried to surf websites or tried to open links from the desktop the phone became very sluggish and started taking from 30 seconds to a few minutes before it would act once I had tapped on the screen. Soon after that the phone wouldn't do anything and I had to switch it on/off just to make a call. And today in the morning when I went off to sleep I put my phone on charge and when I woke up the green battery indicator was blinking but the battery was barely 15%. I don't know what to do. I live in India and got the phone from one of my from America. So I think I can't go to Nokia-India. I am thinking of flashing my phone again and re-installing the PR1.2 update all over again, would that solve the problem? Any advice that you guys might have would immensely appreciated. |
Re: Plz Help: N900 Sluggish and Battery Problem
My best guess at this point is reflash should be your first attempt, since more mundane stuff seems to not work. If the reflash doesn't work (try a couple, if you want to first try one with a backup. If restoring programs from backup results in the same problem, reflash and see if not restoring makes it work. Then you can add programs back on one at a time to see if any cause this problem), it may be a faulty battery. If getting a new battery doesn't help, then perhaps taking it to Nokia will be the only option, since at that point it's probably a hardware issue.

Install Conky or run the 'top' command in the terminal and check which apps are taking the maximum cpu and/or memory... Maybe we can get some idea

Hey Siddarth, I might sound a bit naive but can you please tell me how to run the 'top' command. I don't really know that much about Linux and X-terminal. |
Re: Plz Help: N900 Sluggish and Battery Problem
My guess is, you install Conky, which makes it possible to run top command, and then you open X-Terminal, and just type "top" and hit enter.
-Edit- Though I'm not sure how productive that would by while your N900 is slow enough to take minutes to respond to clicks. *shrug* If you're up for it, that may help shed some light on this, but it may just end up wasting your time. Up to you, basically, but may be helpful. |

I am going back from work and if it works out I'll post again from my phone otherwise I'll come back and tmrw and tell you guys how it worked out from my work station. |
Re: Plz Help: N900 Sluggish and Battery Problem
Actually, I have to apologize, I read the original top command post wrong. You don't need anything to get the top command, you just open X-term and type "top" then enter. I'm guessing conky just gave you a different wat of looking at the same data. So my apologiesl about that.
Anyway, I hope your reflash went well. |
Re: Plz Help: N900 Sluggish and Battery Problem
i also expereinced serious sluggishness in the UI (e.g. transitions among desktop <=> multi running apps<=>mean of icons) recently.
You know, it's weeks after I installed PR1.2. I initially suspected that it's related to PR1.2. Then I realized that it may be due to the fact that I have been accumulating a lot of mp4 videos shot on the device. I deleted them all from the device and the UI transitions become very smooth like brand new. Why did I guess it's due to the mp4? It's because I used to be able to play N900's videos on TV by connecting with a cable. Last week I failed to do that. Then I had such a guess. Now, to experts, may I know why deleting all these mp4 solved sluggish UI problem? Thanks. |
