I had that problem with some themes. Try another theme and it will work :)

Marina Theme does the same thing. I use a custom vkb, so it never bothered me that the default one did this. I only used the default one originally to get Russian characters.

But I digress. For me the theme was good enough (actually just exactly how I wanted), and it was worth having hidden buttons I almost never used. But yeah, it's a theme thing. Find a different theme and eventually you'll hit ones that work pretty soon. (I think the ones that don't work are all from before PR1.2 [but not that all pre1.2 themes have this glitch], since that's when vkb changed. But that's just a guess.)
