SOLVED: Unable to check for updates - Help Please!

Hey all,

I've had my n900 for a few days now, and it works fine, mostly; I'm pleased with it. However, I'm unable to use application manager - it always hangs half way through the checking for updates bar. The Ovi Store, of course, has the same problem. The log is as follows:

hildon-application-manager 2.2.65
DISCONNECTED from (null)
connected to de907b4e-0aa1-4825-9349-b7cd07e7278d

I've tried setting the DNS options under the wifi connection (what I'm using to update) to Google Public's ones, but that makes no difference. Nor does reflashing the device.

Accessing the site on a PC informs me that the site is untrusted!

Any help is really appreciated - I'm tearing out my hair here!

Thanks (:

Have you tried the Nokia Software Update (assuming you can use a computer running Windows)?

That allows direct updating/flashing the firmware.

That for some reason wouldn't work - it got stuck half way through updating and then told me it couldn't find the device. Regardless, changing the firmware doesn't seem to fix the DNS (I assume that's what it is?) problem.

Thanks for the reply.

Also, another quick question (sorry for the double-post); is there a way to use my Windows PC to install applications on then n900 while I wait for a solution to this?

can you try using a different network? public wifi, office,... should be one that uses a different ISP. it might help track down the source of the problem.

Thanks for the response.

Can do - but it will take me a few days to get to one. Anybody else got any ideas?

What is in your /etc/resolv.conf ?
"nameserver 127.0.0.1" should be there only.
For example pc-connectivity-manager has a design bug which makes system DNS broken.

Re: Unable to check for updates - Help Please!

nameserver 127.0.0.1 is the only entry in resolv.conf, yep

Re: Unable to check for updates - Help Please!

As already mentioned, sounds to me like a ISP problem as well.
Try different Access point for a check.
You can not install applications using PC due different Filesystems.
Dunno when using Linux, but I doubt there as well.

Re: Unable to check for updates - Help Please!

If it is an ISP problem - I assume that's a problem with the ISPs DNS - would changing the routers DNS to that of say, Google, solve it?

Thanks for the help everyone.
