How can i unmute the Mic of my N810?

I want to access the Mic device by using the /dev/dsptask/pcm_rec device file but when i enter:
Code:

cat /dev/dsptask/pcm_rec > output.pcm
in a terminal, the resulting file is empty.
So i assume the Mic is muted by default.

How can i unmute it?

Important:
I want be able to do this with a fresh base install of Maemo Diablo.
Because at the moment i can't install additional software like a recording software on my N810.
That's why i try to record from the raw device file.

I remember I think Maemo Recorder disables the mic due to some bug in it. I looked around but never could find an answer in the forums.

Seqretary has a recording companion program. You can have a look at the source code to see how the mic is enabled.
I you do, please post your findings here.

My recollection with Maemo Recorder is that you sometimes had to toggle the volume control to get it to record. I never used Maemo Recorder b/c of this problem -- you basically need to do a test recording run to make sure it was working before you *really* recorded anything. That seemed too burdensome to me. :(

I don't use it anymore, my phone has a recording program that's nice. I wish it was like my old nokia phone though, cause it could play my recordings into a call. So I could record something, then play it into the call...
