Any guides that will help me thorougly understand Linux?

There are some guides in the library to learning C++ and Ubuntu, but what is a specific guide that can help me understand everything there is to know about Linux or Maemo? Any books or online guides? I already know different aspects of computers so this isn't a new thing to me.

Check out the book "Linux in a Nutshell", should be able to get it used for cheap from Amazon etc. It has a pretty comprehensive coverage of the standard Linux commands/programs. Nothing Maemo-specific but the basic stuff like shell commands & pattern matching will be useful in any flavor of Linux.

well maemo is sort of like Linux anyways right? So you can basically do the same thing. I wonder if the N900 has packet injection. If it does I wonder if it's possible to dual boot with Backtrack

Maemo is a linux distro, since it uses busybox some of the shell commands won't necessarily be the same but the standard GNU versions are available in the repos, and other shells etc. That might not mean anything to you yet. :)

You can also use Qole's easy chroot to run debian or ubuntu on your N900 to get a more standard set of software running on your device.

There's another thread about backtrack around here somewhere.

Install openssh on the n900, connect to the phone with a terminal program, e.g. putty and you have a commandline to start teaching yourself Linux....

A nice set of freebies, but might be a bit below your level. Nice to know about to pass to ppl as an intro!

For a more advanced level for nix then I recommend the LPIC study guide as an err guide!

Lots of great tip websites such as:

and ofc how can we forget.....

one of the best ways to learn when moving from one OS to another is to first list out the tasks that you normally perform in one OS and then try to find the equivalent in the new OS.

the search for an answer will branch out into multiple research streams that will quickly give you a better understanding of the new OS.

good luck!

This may sound trivial, but I think itīs essential... Letīs not forget that search engines are on your side. All there is to know about linux is available online, but you will have to put a bit of effort to it to dig that info up. If you havenīt already done so, learn a thing or two about search strings and you īll be good to go.

Happy hunting!
