Skypeout stopped working (troubleshooting)
 

I ran into a problem a couple of days ago in Skype where my Skypeout account stopped working. It seems to be working again now so I thought I'd share my experience for anyone else who might run into the issue. I didn't come across a lot of existing documentation in search of a fix.

My initial problem: I have a Skype subscription plan that allows me "unlimited" Skypeout calls to selected countries with monthly fees. It's worked well enough over Wi-Fi and 3G until the other day. The Skypeout on the N900 would call and I could hear my contact but they could not hear me. The Skypeout calls worked fine though the Skype client on the PC.

These are the troubleshooting steps I performed (listed by easiest to hardest fix IMHO).

Reboot! (easy enough)

Recreate the .Skype profile (Started working for me after doing these steps)
- Go offline in your Skype profile and remove it (Settings->VoIP and IM accounts->"your account"->Delete)
- Log in with X Terminal
- type "mv .Skype Skype-backup"
- Set up Skype again (Settings->VoIP and IM accounts->New)
- Reboot!

Sign into another Skype account and then back into your original account (Other posts mentioned this fixed their Skype issues)

Reflash the firmware. I tried this initally because I thought a part of Skype may have gotten corrupted. I would suggest trying the steps above first and reflashing as a last resort.

Troubleshooting tip: Don't forget you can use the Echo / Sound Test Service if you think there may be an issue with your connection or your microphone! If it's not already in your contact list, add a contact with the Skype field "echo123".

Another issue I've had that I haven't seen anything about is that my Skype calls sound great sometimes and sound frustratingly stuttery at other times. If anyone has any ideas, please share! Thanks!

Well, that didn't work at all. It's a crapshoot if SkypeOut will work from the N900 or not. It always works from a PC. The Skype echo service always works regardless if SkypeOut works or not. This is SO FRUSTRATING. Sometimes it works after a reboot, sometimes it doesn't. There doesn't seem to be anything consistent with it not transmitting voice from my end.

ARGH!!!!!!!!

I have a similar problem where if I make a skypeout call it just hangs up on me and will not ring or connect. Skype to Skype works totally fine.

I have been told that SkypeOut will ring one time to the person I am calling and then hangs up.

I don't use a sim card

I also have the $3 Unlimited US/Canada SkypeOut Plan.

Fixed for now on my n900. Though skype is still not perfect.

Fix involved messing around with Skype files that I had messed with earlier...
sudo rm /etc/skyhost/skypeaudiocodecs.conf
sudo mv /home/user/.Skype /home/user/.Skype.BROKEN
sudo mv /home/user/.Skype.WORKING /home/user/.Skype

If everything was working perfectly I wouldn't have even bothered to mess around with the above files in the first place.
