mp4 is like avi just the container - the used codecs in it can differ.
but there are already many many maaaaaany threads about it.

try to install "decoders support" for additional codecs.

As stated above the video format question was answered many times. Read this post:

To make it short: MP4 can have different profiles and containers for audio and video. Use hexedit, mplayer and avinaptic to find out what sort of video format you have.

Reencode your videos in case your format is not supported:
