Yes those little guys are Lutins (elf) that formerly were working for Santa Claus in Joulupukki in Lapland (Finland). Some tech savvy lutin then established themselves in Oslo a few years ago and worked behind the scene in a company called trolltech (the name makes a lot more sense if you know this secret truth). Because lutin are so smart and are hard workers, they made a cute piece of software. Their reputation grows over the years, and a few years ago they convince Nokia they could become the core of their software strategy. Now they have completelly taken control of Nokia and are the masterminds and hidden task force behind MeeGo. MeeGo is a core piece of their conspiracy for good world domination secret plan which aims to make of the Lutins, Gnomes and Trolls the hidden force behind every computer in the world...

The MeeGo term refers to the episode when they left Santa Claus. For the first time ever Lutins quit Santa Claus because they thought there is better things to do to make the world a better place than to build tons of toy for the consumerist society, and that they could do more to promote sharing and openess. But they were quite afraid of Santa Klaus reaction, this is why when the first lutin started telling it to Santa Klaus he was stuttering, resulting in an excessively long "e" sound :

Later it became a subject of joke and consequently all the lutins leaving Santa Claus were refered to as "MeeGo Lutins".
