help Installing XTerm
Hello, as evident by my low post count and join date, I am quite a noob :) Heres my problem: I uninstalled Xterm advanced, as it was giving me problems...When I tried to run btscanner from it it would give an error saying unable to open xterm even though I started it from the terminal.
When I went to reinstall, the repository was acting weird, saying that it could not refresh useing old package list, and trying and failing to install and version 0.12 because as it said, its outdated. I then manually downloaded oss-xterm_0.13.mh24bora1_armel.deb and also oss-xterm_0.13.mh24_armel.deb; because I wasnt sure which I should install, I tried both, but they fail to install saying they require libvte4 >=1:0.12.2-0mh1....so, I went and found libvte4_0.12.2-0mh1_armel on the site where I got the xterm advanced packages...but, it fails to install giving me an "Incompatible application package" error. So, how do I go about installing Xterm advanced? should I give up? reflash my device then try? Uninstall all of my applications one by one? The reason i'm trying to get this to work is so I can use the network penetration tools that you can download, I installed them, bu they dont show up in the application launch list on the tool bar, so I figured that they need to be run from the terminal. Is there a site that has a tutorial on how to set them up and use them correctly? Also, I am very much a noobie to Linux as I am to my N800, so if someone could point me to a site that would teach me to use the Terminal, and perhaps how to set up scripts for it I would be greatful. Other than my complete ignorance of Linux, I am really enjoying the N800, its fun to play with. Thanks for the help. Update: I tried to install again last night from the repository, and it worked. dont know what I did different, magic I guess :) Does anyone know what might have caused this? so if I run into the same problem I can fix it faster? |
Re: help Installing XTerm
Glad you got it working. Re: your btscanner problem, it's likely a problem with the font/terminal size. After you try to launch btscanner, there should be a file called btscanner.log in the current directory. View that file, and it should show the error. If it says something about terminal size too small, reduce the font size in the terminal a couple of sizes and try again. The "-" button on top of the n800 will reduce font size.
As far as learning penetration tools goes, the best bet is to read through each programs documentation. There is no one set of commands that will work for each situation. Best bet is to google for "program name HOWTO" or "program name tutorial". |
