Access root by USB?

Is it possible to access root by USB without firing up Hildon?

Root user or filesystem root? And what do you mean by firing up Hildon? Do you mean launching the full GUI?

You should be able to get access as the root user by using R&D mode - I don't think that launches the full GUI, but I've not tried it so I don't know for sure.

Re: Access root by USB?

you can
- set up USB NETWORKING and
- use MADDEVELOPER from extras-* and winscp to connect to root file system

you can search both in wiki.maemo.org

Thanks. My problem is that my screen is messed up. Is it somehow possible to access root from pc without pressing anything on the N900 touchscreen?

I can get my N900 into mass storage mode or pc suite mode.

Install it, then start up the SSH server.
Also, read http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_USB_networking

Ctrl+Shift+X should bring up a Terminal, which can help if you know what you're doing. For example, you could use apt-get to install things.

What do you mean by touchscreen messed up, though? Do you mean physically not responding to touch?
